Detectives are investigating the first homicide of the year in Fort Worth. A man was killed and a woman was detained.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A man was shot and killed after he attempted to confront a car burglar in a south Fort Worth parking lot, police said. Officers responded to a shooting call Jan 1 in the 5700 block of Crowley Road, Fort Worth police said in a press release. Police found a victim in a parking lot with a gunshot wound, the release states.

A man died at a Fort Worth shooting range Dec. 30 when his firearm malfunctioned, police said. Officers were dispatched to Shoot Smart at 10305 North Freeway around 8:50 p.m. They found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was treated by medical personnel but died at the scene, according to police.

Gunfire may have rung out during a New Year’s party in Fort Worth overnight. Police got a 9-1-1 call about a shooting victim near 35-W and Risinger, so they showed up along with Fort Worth Fire and Medstar.

Fort Worth police say they are investigating after an individual shot another person and led officers on a vehicle chase on Interstate 35 Saturday. The chase already ended but the I-35W southbound lanes near Heritage Trace were still shut down as of the early evening, according to a police statement.

Derrick Sanders Jr., 19, is charged with felony murder for the death of his uncle, 40-year-old Christopher Sanders Sr.

Officials identified the person killed in a shooting that wounded two others on Christmas Eve in Fort Worth. The victim was 17-year-old Ja’Qualin Houston, according to records from the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.
